The Usual Intro

Famous author and philanthropist J.K. Rowling reached a net worth of $1 billion dollars in early 2022.

She’s best known for penning the Harry Potter book series and has written companion books to go with the main Harry Potter franchise.

Her story is a classic tale that’s similar to that of her main character, Harry Potter. Only instead of magic, it was her talent and perseverance that helped her achieve fame and fortune after years of being poor and struggling.

J.K. Rowling, or Joanne Rowling, faced numerous hardships during her childhood and all the way into her adult years before finding a publisher who would take a chance on her. That publisher helped her achieve wealth and fame beyond her wildest dreams and showed that hard work can pay off.

Before the Spotlight

Joanne Rowling was born to parents Anne (Volant) and Peter Rowlin, both of whom came from middle-class families. She had no middle name at birth and only picked one when she needed a pen name. She chose her paternal grandmother’s name, Kathleen, to use as the initial K.

Rowling’s father was enlisted in the Navy when he got married and started a family. Her father retired from the Navy while her mother was pregnant with her. They settled in Yate and her father found work as an assembly-line production worker, where he eventually worked his way up the career ladder. Her mother found work later in life as a science technician.

Joanne excelled at English throughout her school years but was an average student in other areas of study. She was also an average student when she attended The University of Exeter, slacking off in all subjects, including English. She eventually earned a BA in French and went on to become a bilingual secretary working temp jobs.

In the early 1990s, Rowling found her way to Porto, Portugal, to teach English and met her first husband, television journalist Jorge Arantes in a bar. They struck up a conversation and eventually became romantic partners. Jessica, her first and only child with Arantes, was born in Portugal. During her pregnancy, Rowling wrote the first three chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Domestic abuse marred the marriage with Arantes, causing Rowling to go into hiding with her daughter. In 1993, the two of them moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, where Rowling applied for government housing and assistance. She then went to work in menial jobs that paid poorly and went back to school to become a teacher.

During this time, Rowling kept working on the first Harry Potter novel as she worked in odd jobs before finally getting a teaching job at Leith Academy in 1996.

The Journey to Success

Rowling finished the initial draft of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in June 1995. The enthusiastic response from test readers helped Rowling gain representation from the Christopher Little Literary Agency, who submitted the book to 12 publishers.

All 12 publishers rejected the book. No one took the book seriously until Barry Cunnigham, the head of children’s literature at Bloomsbury, saw his daughter eagerly wanting more after reading the first book.

A total of 500 books were published by Bloomsbury, with Rowling earning $4,200 in royalties. A short time later, the book rights were auctioned off at a book fair. Scholastic Corporation bought the publishing rights for over $100,000, putting Rowling on the path to success.
