37 of the Best Poems About Teaching

Do you still remember your favorite teacher from school? If that teacher made a difference in your life, chances are you do remember them.

It’s hard to overstate how important teachers are in today’s society. They are responsible for the education of our youth, which in itself is arguably one of the most important roles any single person can undertake.

But that’s not all; they’re also role models to the children and teens who tend to pick up a lot from the authority figures around them.

While education is by no means unimportant, sometimes, it’s not just about how a teacher is at teaching. Sometimes, what matters more is how well they’re able to influence their students, develop their ethics and personalities, and have a life-changing impact on them. That’s what separates a good teacher from a great one.

To let your teacher know how much you appreciate their efforts, you can share some poetry with them – bonus points if they teach literature as a subject! We’ve gathered 37 of the most sincere, cordial poems that make for great messages to send to your teacher.

If it’s teacher’s day and you want to express your gratitude in person, write one of these down on a gift card and deliver it to them yourself. That’s sure to put a smile on their face:

Best Teacher Poems

1.) Thank You, Mrs. Newby

A happy smile, contagious to all,
With a heart of gold that never falls.
As my role model, you set the bar high,
But you’ve taught me all I can do is try.
As my friend, you support me,
Helping me achieve goals I never imagined I could reach.
As my teacher, you motivate me
To become the best I can possibly be.
You’re always there to help others,
Putting yourself second and acting like a mother.
You’re a very admired teacher
Who’s caring, kind, and smart.
Whether I like it or not,
You’re always here for me
And with my best intentions in your heart.
I always know you’ll have my back.
The way you love to help others learn
Is something for which I will always yearn,
And one day when I’m a teacher too,
I will strive to be just like you.

2.) Just a Teacher

I heard you say the other day,
“Oh, you’re just a teacher anyway.
You laugh and play your day away.
You’re free at 3, have your summers off.”
You snickered softly and even scoffed.
I’m sad to say, that you just don’t see,
What being a teacher means to me.
Sure, I laugh and play my day away.
Because learning is fun and that’s just my way
If I were free at 3 and had my summers off,
I’d too snicker softly and even scoff
Unfortunately my paycheck does, but I do not.
But you see Good Sir, Ma’am, Madam or Miss
Being just a teacher is much more than this.
I just teach your child to read and write,
To just explore and question,
To just think and be bright
I just dry their tears when they’re having a bad day.
I’m just there for them in each and every way.
Your most precious asset just deserves a lot.
And being just a teacher, I am not.
I dare you to just take a closer look.
For being just a teacher doesn’t come in a book
It comes from the heart and it’s a passion you see.
So, being JUST a teacher is fine by me!

3.) Untitled

With a special gift for learning
And with a heart that deeply cares,
You add a lot of love
To everything you share,
And even though you mean a lot,
You’ll never know how much,
For you helped to change the world
Through every life you touched.
You sparked the creativity
In the students whom you taught,
And helped them strive for goals
That could not be bought,
You are such a special teacher
That no words can truly tell
However much you’re valued
For the work you do so well.
Thank you so much for being
So very nice, kind and good;
I like you so much, (Miss Giles)
I’d stay here if I could
I always loved your class;
Your teaching helped me see,
That to have a full and happy life,
Learning is the key.

4.) I Want To Be Like You

Thank you, teacher,
for being my life’s role model.
When I consider all you’ve taught me
and reflect on the kind of person you are,
I want to be like you—
smart, interesting and engaging,
positive, confident, yet unpretentious.
I want to be like you—
well-informed and easy to understand,
thinking with your heart as well as your head,
gently nudging us to do our best,
with sensitivity and insight.
I want to be like you—
giving your time, energy and talent
to ensure the brightest possible future
for each of us.
Thank you, teacher
For giving me a goal to shoot for:
I want to be like you!

– Joanna Fuchs

5.) The Teacher

Remember when we met
When I was just a kid?
And you said to me,
“It’s okay, we’re all friends here.”
And treated me like a normal kid.
Well even if you don’t,
Thank you, as you now mean the world to me.

Remember when I first cried in front of you
When times were tough for me?
And you said to me,
“It’s okay, I’m here.”
And it all seemed a little better.
Well even if it’s slipped your mind,
It made me who I am today.

Remember when you fell apart?
You couldn’t cope without your Dad.
And I said to you,
“It’s okay, I’m here for you.”
And you put back up your mask
Because it had slipped that day and I saw
The real you, scared and hiding.

Remember when I left you
To move on to my next stage?
And you said to me,
“I’ll always be here for you.”
And we hugged and talked for hours.
You wanted me to chase my dreams
And helped me through my fear.

Remember when I became you
And you took to the sidelines?
And I said to you,
“I’m here to carry on.”
And you watched like a proud parent
As I took my first steps?

Now it’s me remembering you
As you lie in the ground.
I’ll always remember your calming voice
And be grateful for what I found.

– Amelia Jane

6.) To My Most Special Teacher

I know I wasn’t the best behaved
that you’ve ever taught
I know I got distracted
much more than I ought
I didn’t pay attention
every minute of the day,
And admittedly, my favorite time
was going out to play
Yet determinedly you taught me
putting me to the test
Encouraging my efforts
as you made me do my best
Some lessons were a challenge
but you taught me how to cope
Each day I grew in confidence
Ability, wisdom and hope
I really now appreciate
you made me learn through fun
Thank you so very much
for all you’ve said and done

– Riklet Knigle

7.) Favorite Teacher

Thank you, favorite teacher
For acting like a friend

and taking time to show me,
lessons hard to comprehend.

Thank you for your caring
and lots of other stuff;

For all the things you did,
I can’t thank you enough.

– Unknown

8.) A Teacher for All Seasons

A teacher is like Spring,
Who nurtures new green sprouts,
Encourages and leads them,
Whenever they have doubts.

A teacher is like Summer,
Whose sunny temperament
Makes studying a pleasure,
Preventing discontent.

A teacher is like Fall,
With methods crisp and clear,
Lessons of bright colors
And a happy atmosphere.

A teacher is like Winter,
While it’s snowing hard outside,
Keeping students comfortable,
As a warm and helpful guide.

Teacher, you do all these things,
With a pleasant attitude;
You’re a teacher for all seasons,
And you have my gratitude!

– Joanna Fuchs

9.) Teachers

Teachers proudly stand in front of the class
With knowledge and influence en masse,
Igniting a flame in curious minds
Proficiently as the lessons unwind.

Teaching, a calling that burns deep inside
To instruct thirsty, inquisitive minds.
Installing passion that leads to success.
Inspiring pupils to give of their best.

Encouraging scholars’ creative gifts,
Praising, applauding whatever it is.
Those who are taught well live well, get ahead.
Blessed are the teachers, it has to be said.

It doesn’t go unnoticed, the work involved
Developing great people to evolve.
All humble, nurturing teachers out there,
Thank you all for your compassionate care.

Those who go on to find their hopes and dreams,
Remember the teachers who cast the beams.

– Beryl L Edmonds

10.) It Takes A Special Person

It takes a special person
To teach a child in class.
To just keep his attention
In a world that moves so fast.
to show a child he is unique.
With talents deep inside
To help to build his confidence,
So he can beam with pride.
To show a little patience
For a child who’s lost his way,
to a child who feels abandoned
Who has seen better days.
To inspire and to motivate,
So a child can learn and grow
To go into this big wide world
That has its highs and lows.
You are a special person.
You always gives your best;
And for every child who has your class,
Their life is truly blessed.

– Manasi Mehta

11.) If I Could Teach You, Teacher

f I could teach you, teacher,
I’d teach you how much more
you have accomplished
than you think you have.
I’d show you the seeds
you planted years ago
that are now coming into bloom.
I’d reveal to you the young minds
that have expanded under your care,
the hearts that are serving others
because they had you as a role model.
If I could teach you, teacher,
I’d show you the positive effect
you have had on me and my life.
Your homework is
to know your value to the world,
to acknowledge it, to believe it.
Thank you, teacher.

– Joanna Fuchs

12.) Don’t Want To Say Goodbye

I remember the times when you were there for me.
Through my many tears you helped me really see
that you were always there for me.
You stood close to me like a friend, there for me
until the end.

I will never forget you and the things
you helped me through.
My inspiration is you.
You were always there when I needed you.
I now will always have great memories of you

You would ask me, “How are you doing?”
I would say I’m fine
as tears start to form in my eyes .
You always knew that I was really not fine.

You are someone I want to be like.
I found out who that person is; that person is you.
I hope that you remember me through your days.
You have touched my heart in so many ways.

I look up to you and I see a ray of sunshine
shining in on me.
I knew God sent me one of his angels
when he sent you to me.

You help me through it all,
coming to save me every time I fall.
If I could say one word, that wouldn’t
tell it all.

I am so happy to have you with me.
You helped me to really see what I couldn’t see.
You helped me to find the real me.
You turned me into the beautiful person
I was meant to be.

If I say goodbye to you, I will just fall apart
because you have always been in my heart.
I don’t want to lose you.
You care about me and I care about you too.

I remember the day I first met you and you met me.
It was like it was really meant to be.
You are someone I hold close to my heart.
There I know that we will never be apart.

– Asha Cook

13.) Why God Made Teachers

When God created teachers,
He gave us special friends
To help us understand His world
And truly comprehend
The beauty and the wonder
Of everything we see,
And become a better person
With each discovery.
When God created teachers,
He gave us special guides
To show us ways in which to grow
So we can all decide
How to live and how to do
What’s right instead of wrong,
To lead us so that we can lead
And learn how to be strong.
Why God created teachers,
In His wisdom and His grace,
Was to help us learn to make our world
A better, wiser place.

– Kevin William Huff

14.) Thank You Teacher

I thank you for your helping hand
for your warm and tender heart
and for the opportunity
to make a brand new start

I hold fast to tomorrow
and treasure each passing day
never taking for granted
that which can be taken away

I have learned to count my blessings
never dwelling on the past
and to build a brighter future
with the knowledge from your class

You taught me to be confident
I could do it if I tried
and taught me to have courage
to take everything in stride

You’re such a wonderful teacher
for all it is plain to see
I just wanted to let you know
how much you have meant to me

– Angela DeMelo

15.) Mrs. Stein

The school bell rings, we go inside,
Our teacher isn’t there.
“Maybe she’s sick!” her pet cries out.
Yeah, right. As if I’d care.

I have a D in Language Arts,
My grade in math’s the same.
And now my teacher might be sick.
Could be I’m part to blame.

She doesn’t like me, that’s a fact,
I wouldn’t tell a lie.
She says stuff like: “You’re very smart,
But you don’t even try.”

I start to laugh—my teacher’s sick!
And boy, I’m feeling fine . . .
When someone knocks the door right in,
And there stands Frankenstein.

She’s six-foot-eight, her dress is black,
She’s wearing combat boots.
I start to gasp, she growls and says,
“I’ll be your substitute.”

The teacher’s pet is whimpering;
She doesn’t stand a chance.
The smart kid stares and points and faints.
The bully wets his pants.

“My name is Mrs. Stein,” she says,
And every student cringes.
She leans the door against the wall,
She’s knocked it off its hinges.

“Now let’s begin. You there! Stand up!”
She looks me in the eye.
I try to move, my legs won’t work.
I know I’m going to die!

In one big step she’s next to me,
And she does more than hover.
She blocks the sun, it’s dark as night,
My classmates run for cover.

“Now get up to the board,” she says.
“I’d like to see some action.
Pick up the chalk, explain to us
Division of a fraction.”

I leap away to save my life,
This time I really try.
I think and think and think and croak,
“Invert and multiply.”

“Correct! She says. I breathe again
And head back for my chair.
“You, FREEZE!” she shouts, and I stop cold.
“And don’t go anywhere.”

This all begins at nine o’clock,
I fight to stay alive.
It seems to last a million years—
The clock says nine-o-five.

That’s just three hundred seconds,
And then my turn is through.
She points at every one of us—
“Now you. Now, you. Now, you.”

We all get nailed this awful day,
There’s nowhere we can hide.
The lunch bell rings, we cannot eat,
We simply crawl outside.

We can’t believe the other kids
Who run and play their games.
Not us, who have big Mrs. Stein—
Our world is not the same.

The bell has tolled, I must go in,
My time on earth is through.
I’ll leave this on the playground—
Here’s what you have to do.

You must listen to your teacher
And pray her health is fine,
Or one day soon you’ll hear the words:
“My name is Mrs. Stein.”

– Bill Dodds

16.) Sonnet For An Unforgettable Teacher

(Teacher’s name),
When I began your class I think I knew
The kind of challenges you’d make me face.
You gave me motivation to pursue
The best, and to reject the commonplace.

Your thinking really opened up my mind.
With wisdom, style and grace, you made me see,
That what I’d choose to seek, I’d surely find;
You shook me out of my complacency.

I thank you now for everything you’ve done;
What you have taught me I will not outgrow.
Your kind attention touched my mind and heart;
In many ways that you will never know.

I will remember you my whole life through;
I wish that all my teachers were like you.

– Joanna Fuchs

17.) Thank You, Teachers

Teachers are keys
That unlock the student’s mind.
You are guides who mold our mind.
You are one of a kind.

You are like a shepherd
Who guides the sheep
To the right path.

You, teachers, turn the pages
Of the great books.
You train us well
To reach great heights.

Thank you, teachers,
For all you have done.
In the group of many
You are one.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all lined up in front of the school, excited for another fun year to come. You have always been there to encourage me to do my best, to be myself and never give up. I will miss you so much this year and know that it won’t be the same without you. 21.) Not Just A Teacher But A Friend

I had nowhere to turn, had nowhere to go.
This is just something I think you need to know.
I don’t know what made me trust you.
I still remember the day when I told you what I’ve been through.
I thought I should run away, go hide in a hole,
but then you really brought out my true soul.

As each day grew longer,
our trust became stronger.
Each time I wanted to cry,
you stayed there right by my side.

Then I moved to the next grade.
Boy, was I afraid
that our trust would slowly fade,
but I was wrong;
we are still strong.

Even though sometimes you don’t have time,
you at least ask me if I am fine.
Even though sometimes I am not,
I feel like I have just been shot,
I smile and say yes I’m alright.
Then I walk away and you’re out of sight.
I’ll just have to wait.
I still have my fate.

I am so glad
that you were there when I was sad
and this is what makes you
not just my 7th grade teacher but also my friend.

For wiping their tears, and giving them cheers,
And teaching them how to pray.

Thank you for being a teacher
Who always does your part,
To teach children about our Saviour
And how he can live in their heart.

Thank you for being a teacher
Who tells each child you’re glad they came.

Why are you so positive?
And she answered,
So that you learn to seek hope!

And she answered,
To make you perfect!
Then I asked her,
Why are you leaving me?
And smiling, she answered,
So that you become independent!

27.) A Tribute To Teacher

You are my teacher
you taught me the lessons of life
It’s you who made me
it’s you who encouraged me
it’s you who inspires me
to have belief in my own
when I fall down
Sometimes you scolded me
sometimes you punished me
at that time it felt really bad
but now I can figure out
even that too was for my goodness
I can never pay your debt which I owe
but today atleast I can promise you
the wisdom you provided me
the morale you gifted me
I will let it be my power to bring
a better and brighter tomorrow
SO
thanks for being
thanks for inspiring

We’d like to thank you for all that you’ve done.
For the time you’ve invested in our daughters and sons.
For the places you’ve taken them, and you’ve taken them far!
For leading and guiding them, to their North Star!
For your timeless energy that never seems to tire.
For that special talent you possess to inspire!
For making your students the best they can be.
For trying to teach them all to see;
how far they can fly and how high they can soar.
For making them all crave to learn more!
You’ve challenged their minds, their hearts and souls.
You’ve taught them it’s possible to reach for their goals.
And as they journey through life near and far,
We will always remember their SHINING STAR!

– Debbie Klier

29.) Teacher

‘Teacher’ – a word that takes me back to the start,
The start of my very first day at school.
I tightly clenched my mother’s hand.
I was afraid to let her go,
But suddenly somebody held my other hand
and all my fear flew ’cause there was someone to understand.
She wiped my tears and took me to class.
It’s when my grooming starts.
I understood that a teacher is the second mother or father I had,
For which I’m still glad.
I am glad that I lived under their guidance.
They taught me all, all they had.
All the manners and values I have are just because of them.
In my growing life, they are the stem.
Like a tree, I have reached heights,
For my strength re-unites.
Teachers are my preachers,
They’ll live in my heart forever.
For they have given me strength to endeavor.
They are my most precious treasure.

– Shambhavi Singh

32.) You Touched My Inner Soul

The Clarity you gave to me,
It shone like Angel rays,
Like water rushed on golden sands,
And crashed along the bays.

The questions deep within my heart,
Confused my humble mind,
Yet when you spoke your words aloud
It seemed, no longer I was blind.

The answers all came flooding in,
They touched my inner soul,
The knowledge that you gave to me
Within my heart I hold.

I understood that the events
That troubled me somehow,
Was nothing to be frightened of,
Instead I should be Proud.

I Thank You Sir most graciously,
These words I say aloud,
For the Clarity you’ve given me,
Has made me feel quite proud.

35.) A Teacher

A teacher introduces us to a new vision of life,
to make us as sharp as a knife.

Someone who gives us a new sight,
to make us reach the greatest height,
to give us the greatest flight.

So a teacher
makes a human being
the most intelligent and
respectable creature.

36.) My Best Teachers

My best teachers
My favorite teachers
Carriers of a torch
Their eyes glisten and spark
With the fire of transferring knowledge
My best teachers
My favorite teachers
Questions turned to critical thought
They time their poignant queries
Like a hunter times her arrow’s release
My best teachers
My favorite teachers
Have all the world for a classroom
They impart their shining unexpected wisdom
Sparkling gems hidden in the morass of daily life
My best teachers
My favorite teachers
Heroes oft unsung
They spin new minds with golden thread
Then walk softly to the future with a grin

37.) Teachers

Teachers
Paint their minds
and guide their thoughts
Share their achievements
and advise their faults

Inspire a Love
of knowledge and truth
As you light the path
Which leads to our youth

For our future brightens
with each lesson you teach
Each smile you lengthen
Each goal you help reach

for the dawn of each poet
each philosopher and king
Begins with a teacher
And the wisdom they bring.
